What’s so super about superfoods?

Superfoods. You’ve heard the term but don’t know exactly what it means. It sounds good, though, right? Any food called “super” must be something special. And these foods are.

Superfoods are some of the healthiest foods around. They are nutrient rich, often filled with antioxidants and can help increase energy levels. Some superfoods are thought to ward off cancer. Other superfoods help prevent heart disease and diabetes. Here are eight superfoods you can add to your diet to increase your overall health and wellness.

Black Beans
A cup of black beans has fifteen grams of protein and doesn’t contain saturated fat found in red meat, making it one of the best protein sources you can choose.

Oats
Oats are high in fiber and filling. A small bowl of oats can easily bring you from breakfast to lunch without feeling deprived. Oats are also a healthy carb that burns fat and boosts the metabolism.

Avocados
In small amounts, avocados are extremely healthy. Avocados contain oleic acid which may quiet hunger.

Chia Seeds
These tiny seeds are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and provide protein, healthy fats and fiber.

Fish
While fish oil is known to have many health benefits, including protecting memory, fish itself may protect your heart, fight cancer and strengthen your immune system.

Flax Seeds
These seeds can help your digestion, strengthen your immune system and help regulate sugar. Flax seeds are also said to help with diabetes.

Garlic
Garlic may lower cholesterol, help with high blood pressure and fight cancer.

Kale
Kale contains high amounts of phyto-chemicals that may help in preventing certain types of blindness. Kale may also help to fight cancer.

Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is not only packed with protein, it may help increase bone strength, lower cholesterol, build a stronger immune system and encourage better digestion.
